Framed Pinwheel Block | April Modern Sewcialites BOM

Modern Pinwheel Block

I have a confession.

Triangles kinda scare me.

Not in a “I need to run and hide” kind of way, but more of an “ugh, this is going to get messy” kind of way!

I typically prefer sewing my triangles using the HST or HRT methods. Unless of course I’m going improv, in which case I’m totally down for a little wonkiness!

But working with straight up triangles leaves you exposed to that bias edge and it can have a mind of its own.

So now you understand my frame of mind when I pulled up this month’s Modern Sewcialites Block of the Month pattern and noticed there were raw edge triangles involved – eeeek!

But here’s what’s so fun about quilting – the more you do it, the better you get. Practice, practice and a little more practice!

And a few pins don’t hurt either 😉

Once I read the pattern, then it was onto the scrap bin for inspiration.

FABRIC SELECTION

I opted to keep some of the pink I used in my House Block, partly because I already had some squares about the size needed (= path of least resistance 😉). And partly because I wanted some continuity between these scrappy blocks.

Once I had the pink selected, I then opted for this blue print called Buttercup Drops from Amy Sinibaldi’s Playground fabric collection for Art Gallery fabrics that I used in my Playtime quilt. While I was in that section of my fabric stash, I also pulled these Jumpsie Daisy Sweetice and Fun Hopscotch prints from the same collection.

For a little added texture, I found this grey linen that’s been kicking around my stash since 2014 (leftover from my first aprons and pillows I made and sold! Love how those little bits are full of memories!).

MATERIALS USED

With the exception of my January block which is still a WIP and may get scrapped and started over (that’s the current thought in any case), I’m totally up to date with this quilt-along (QAL). Woot woot!!

BLOCK ROUND-UP

I love this block as it totally reminds me of the first quilt block I ever made - pinwheels! And that playtime led to my very first quilt and discovering a true love for quilting. Pinwheels will always have a special place in my heart!

In case you missed the other quilt blocks you can see:

Oh, and Stephanie from the Modern Sewciety also shares a monthly round-up of what my quilty sewcialite sisters have been stitching up.

And if you’re looking to get in on this QAL, you can sign up here to become a member of the Modern Sewcialites. The monthly membership gives you access to the QAL as well as some other bonus content.

3 down, 1 under construction and 8 more to go!

Happy quilting!
