Happy day of love, my friends!

For some reason, Valentine’s Day always brings back memories from elementary school when we used to share little cards featuring Snoopy or The Care Bears with lots of hearts and flowers pictured.

Remember those?!

I remember the excitement of writing out my little notes to my best friends and classmates and the sheer joy I felt distributing the pretty red and pink envelopes out that morning in class.
I love that that’s where my mind goes on Valentine’s Day – it highlights for me how it truly is the simple things in life that mean the most.

Well, flowers and chocolate can’t hurt either 😉

There are lots of other ways to show your love – a kind gesture, a phone call out of the blue, a hug – all of those are sure to make someone feel special and brighten their day.

But, since I’m a quilter, I tend to show my love through handmade quilty goodness 😉 And you can too!

The February block from the Modern Sewciacialites BOM quilt is just your ticket.

You don’t have to turn this one into a full-on quilt – it would be super cute as a mini wall hanging to share with one of your besties! Like this pretty mini I made last year.

And the best part is, this block comes together super quick. As in, under a half hour you’ll have a fully cut and pieced block. It’s that quick.

I’m planning on including this one in my Modern Sewcialities BOM quilt, so I’ve left it as is, but I’m tempted to make another just so I can add it to my expanding wall of minis!!

I haven’t fully decided on my colourway for the MS BOM quilt, but I do intend to focus on fabrics I already have in my stash. Even though I’ve been making quite a few quilts, my fabric collection just seems to keep growing – I’m not sure how that happens?! Well, it could be all that online shopping I can’t seem to resist! What can I say? Those online sales are hard to resist!! Do you have this textile expansion problem too? Is there a fabric stash anonymous club I can join to talk about this issue?!

In any case, one of my 2018 goals is to work through my stash, especially my ever expanding bins, bags and baskets of scraps. And that’s exactly where I went for inspiration for this block.

These Karen Lewis Textiles prints are leftover from my Sewmojo Mini Quilts (post still to come on those). The blush pinky coral tones are my idea of Valentine’s colours (well, anytime really!) But I also loved the organic prints to balance out the very geometric nature of the heart block. I went with a white background, as I see this quilt being quite scrappy and I wanted something to ground the mix of colours and prints. I’m happy with where it’s headed, even if I’m only one block in – ha!
