This post is about the good a community can do in a time of
need.
We’ve seen our quilting community rally after the Fort
McMurray fires, and saw it again following the Pulse club shooting. This time
it’s my local Montreal Modern Quilt Guild that has put out a Call to Action.
They are asking for help in supporting the families affected by the shooting that
occurred on Sunday January 31, 2017 in a Québec City mosque during prayer time.

The intent is to collect Quilted House Blocks to create quilts
that will be donated to the families impacted.

There has already been a great response to the request and people
from around the world have been participating, sharing their support and
expressing their concerns for those affected.
As I write this, there are currently 209 Instagram posts using the
#quiltsforqc hashtag; and that’s just a little over a week after the call went out!

I wanted to design my own to bring a little extra diversity
and love to the final quilts that will be made. So far, I’ve already tackled
a few blocks. And hope to sneak in a few more before the deadline
in early March.

If you want to design your own, here are the quilt block
requirements:

- blocks should be 12.5″ square
- solid and non-figurative print fabrics are best (i.e.: no
images of people or animals) - it would be nice to have the background fabric be a light
neutral (white, light grey, cream, low-volume prints, etc.) if possible - the house can be as simple or as complex as you like, feel
free to improvise and customize - if you are located in Montreal, you can bring your completed
blocks to the Montreal Modern Quilt Guild’s February 14th meeting or to the February
sew-in on the 18th

The deadline to submit the quilt blocks is March 4, 2017.
Sometimes there is a little good that comes out of horrible
events and, although quilts won’t fix the problem, the rally of support the quilting
community is showing demonstrates there is still a lot of love in this world.
And knowing there is some comfort headed to the families affected by this
tragedy truly warms my heart.
Whether you make a block or a few, spread the word or just
send positive thoughts, any help you can lend to this call to action would be
greatly appreciated. Sometimes it is the little actions that count – let’s make
