2017 Q1 Finish-A-Long - Proposed Projects

2017 Q1 Finish-A-Long Proposed Projects | Shannon Fraser Designs | Modern Quilting | WIP

With last year being so unpredictable, my success with the Finish-A-Long was quite disappointing. And with my current goal for keeping 2017 open and not over committing myself, I didn’t think I would be participating in it this year.
But I would like to get some WIPs off my shelf and clear the decks so I can focus on new projects without too much guilt! Tracking is always a great way to accomplish goals and having a community to share those with is even more helpful.

With that all said, I was still hesitant to sign-up. And then I noticed Izzy, my fellow Montreal Modern Quilt Guild member from Dizzy Quilts Blog, is one of the hosts this year and I just couldn’t resist supporting her.

So, I’m giving this another try. I’m not sure if I will hit my targets, but at least I will have it documented and I suppose that in of itself is a step in the right direction ;)
Riley Blake Black & White Table Runner
2017 Q1 Finish-A-Long Proposed Projects | Shannon Fraser Designs | Modern Quilting | WIP

I’m almost half-way through all the needle turn appliqué, which is where I left off last summer when I was unceremoniously put out of commission with a serious case of tendinitis. My hand is still not where it should be, but I’m hoping to tackle this in the evenings and keep the sessions short. I’ve been really excited to get to the quilting step on this project, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed this one gets done this quarter.
Improv Playground Fabric Scraps
2017 Q1 Finish-A-Long Proposed Projects | Shannon Fraser Designs | Modern Quilting | WIP

I’ve had a bowl of scraps leftover from the flying geese I included in the Playtime Quilt I made last fall for Amy Sinibaldi's Playground Fabric Showcase. Everyday I’ve walked by that bowl I’ve imagined what I would do with them. And each day my imagination would lead me to another possibility. I’ve finally started sewing them, but haven’t a clue where the quilt is headed.

Not sure if this still counts as a project I can include on this list. But it is started and I know it will be using up my scraps combined with either linen or a white solid. In any event, I’m including her here as I would like to see her completed this quarter.
Mug Rug

It’s my middle brother’s (I have 3) birthday in February and I know he loves his coffee. I figured a handmade quilted mug rug would be a nice way to brighten his office desk! I’m going to work with some fabric scraps from my Winter Star Quilt project I made last fall for Pat Bravo’s Heartland blog tour.
Molinari 180 Degrees Quilt
2017 Q1 Finish-A-Long Proposed Projects | Shannon Fraser Designs | Modern Quilting | WIP

It looks like the Montreal Modern Quilt Guild’s 2016 Molinari challenge has found an exhibition place! So, I best complete all the thread burying that remains to be tackled! That and making a label and sewing the already made hanging sleeve on her. Except for the thread burying, this one should be nice and quick to finish up.
Pink Lemonade

I picked-up some Kona Highlight last year because, well, it was the colour of the year and it looked like it could be fun to add to my stash (as one tends to do, right?!). And it sat there for quite awhile until one day I paired it with a printed fabric I purchased several months prior to that during a sale event at a local quilt store. I absolutely adore this print and couldn’t figure out how to use her up without losing the impact of her design. So, I’ve decided to feature her as the backing of my Pink Lemonade quilt. The top is well underway, I just need to finish some HSTs, sew her up and then figure out how I plan on quilting her! This one in particular just brings me supreme joy.

There’s a few other WIPs that are sitting there, but I’ll leave it to the 5 projects I have listed. Besides, I’ll need to keep something for Q2 ;)

Happy quilting my friends.

  3. You got some great projects on your list! And I really like the graphics you created for the post. Happy stitching and good luck finishing. I'm trying the strategy of working for a little while each day on three different hand projects: one EPP, one hand quilting and a needleturn appliqué. I'm hoping it will keep my shoulder and hands happy and that I won't stall out on any one project. We'll see...

    1. That is such a great strategy, Marla! I like having a few projects on the go as well, since I invariably end up getting bored at one point or needing to ponder my next steps ;) I look forward to hearing how it pans out for you!

  5. I too had an unsuccessful 2016, so I'm making the time in 2017 to finish up some of those lingering projects so that just like you I can work on new things guilt free! You have a bunch of gorgeous projects started that would be nice to see finished. Thank you for participating in the FAL, on behalf of the 2017 global FAL hosts.
